FILTRATION -
Filtrate: the liquid which is allowed through.
- When a solid needs to be separated from a liquid.
- This is often done through the use of filter paper
- This contains holes that, although too small to be seen, are large enough to allow the liquid molecules through but not the solid ones
- The solid is therefore trapped in the filter paper while the liquid moves through it
- Eg. Sand and Water

CRYSTALLISATION -
- Add a solvent that the desired solid is soluble in, and dissolve it
- Filter the mixture
- A solution is warmed
- The solvent evaporates
- Solution will be left to cool
- Crystals start to form
